PROJECT
Courtyard Cafe, Newcastle University

Year of project: 2023

Project specification:

Novus Property Solutions were commissioned by Newcastle University to refurbish the Courtyard Cafe in the Old Library Building.

With an initial short lead time amid some concerns about developing competition with other new food outlets in the area, Novus turned to Ambic to fulfill the furniture requirements based on our previous reliability in delivering on short timescales.

Ambic provided several curved servery counters made from Corian® solid surface which had to be heated in our giant powder coating oven to create the curved design.

Several other areas such as a fridge “grab and go” section, condiment and cleaning areas had hand-made surrounds comprising individual slats of stained and varnished wood which were painstakingly installed by hand.

Some unique curved and upholstered seating areas with integral planters also presented a challenge with laminate sheeting that also had to be carefully shaped to fit the contours of the tightly curving seat. Again, individual slats were added to match the surrounding features. The fabulous upholstery work was completed by our friends at Armitage and Wilson and perfectly complements this stunning design.

We also created a unique feature wall behing a seating area with acoustic fabric and slatted panels complete with an ERW mild steel screen to complete the look and create a divide with the adjoining area.

Project managers Frances and Shannon both agreed that the project really showed off Ambic’s capabilities when it came to unique bespoke design.

Why did the client choose Ambic?:  Ambic had worked previously with Novus and proved their ability to work within tight timescales.

Outcome: The project was delivered on time and within budget, a few additional requirements were introduced during the project but Ambic’s flexibility meant we were able to overcome and fulfill these without any delays.
